Of all the stressful decisions you have to make while getting ready to go out – whatever the occasion – choosing the right length of necklaces doesn’t seem to be the worst. And you are right! At first sight, it isn’t! Although… a few tips can come in handy! If you look at the image below, you will know what the industry length standards are: Collar, Choker, Princess, Matinee, Opera and Rope.
*Despite the name, the collarbone isn't really in your neck. Instead, it's one of two long, thin bones that connect the breastbone to your shoulder blades. You can feel or see your collarbones toward the top of your chest, running beneath the top of your shoulders.
Knowing that ultimately, you have to choose the length you are comfortable with, it wouldn’t hurt to consider your body type, your neck length, your face shape and finally, the clothes you are wearing before making a decision. Consider the choker, for example. Its typical length makes it a great choice for people with long, swan-like necks and if worn on a short neck or a wide one, it may make it look...stocky. So, a better choice would be a longer necklace -like matinee length – that would slim you down and are great for professional and casual outfits as well. If you are not the typical 5’9 model, you would want your necklace to be proportional to your torso type. So go for a shorter necklace. One that sits on your collarbone and will not overtake you. Whether you have an oval, square, diamond, heart-shaped, or round face, you might want to take that into consideration while choosing your piece of jewelry. While oval faces are easy to match, round faces will ask for longer necklaces that will create a V overall form, and heart- shaped faces will require short, round necklaces. Jewelry can be versatile (remember Lady Di dancing with her royal pearl necklace worn on her back?), so the right length of necklace will highlight any outfit. While keeping in mind that turtle necks are perfect with any length, open collar shirts might suit short necklaces better. In conclusion, while acknowledging a few rules and standard concepts won’t hurt anyone, it will ultimately be your intuition and common sense that will dictate your choice of necklace. So, whatever makes you feel sophisticated and elegant, in your own way…go for it!
